Why is it that you never see your favorite superheroes checking in to the doctor’s office? Is it that we portray the image that in order to be a “hero” to someone that you have to be almost invincible to pain or suffering?

Depression and other mental health struggles do not discriminate. An important part of any kind of human service or ministry is to be mentally and spiritually well. Too often, in our flesh, we try to mask the perceived weaknesses associated with depression, anxiety, and emotional suffering that it eventually leads to burnout or a host of other problems.

This week, we’re saying, “NO MORE!”

It is time to step out of that darkness and open the doors for conversations to save our leaders, healers, and ministers. But how do we do it? Where do we start? Is this even possible in a world that tends to shy away from embracing vulnerability?

Erin and Jon were married on August 2, 2002 settled down in a Midwestern Wisconsin city and began to enjoy and contribute to a community they loved. Jon loved God his family and serving others and was known as big “fellowship junkie.” Jon and Erin’s family grew as did their love for God and their involvement in their church and community.

Olivia, their oldest child demonstrated a real love for God and people and would often be found in the middle of a conversation with adult friends about God, eternity and other topics that seemed to set her apart. Those who think of her today might have both a tear in their eye and a smile on their face as they remember her loving and sincere heart. She was quiet, but silly, one who was cherished by her family and friends.

On, May 3, 2015, as they went for an early spring walk a random act of violence temporarily separated this family and left Erin fighting for her life.

The extreme pain of separation has given Erin an understanding of God, His love and His healing power. Although Erin’s story still has many chapters to complete, she candidly shares with those willing to listen where hope can be found.
